UN meeting to address food crisis

Key United Nations development agencies are meeting in Switzerland to try to develop solutions to ease the escalating global food crisis.

Led by secretary general Ban Ki-Moon, officials want to mitigate the impact of the steep rise in staple food prices and prevent food shortages worsening.

The World Food Programme (WFP) says an extra 100 million people cannot afford enough food because of higher prices.

Food has become increasingly expensive, triggering unrest in several countries.

States "still failing on global green treaties"

Many countries are failing to implement international environmental treaties, environmentalists have warned ahead of a meeting of the UN's environment programme (Unep) in Monaco this week.

The meeting will discuss environmental challenges outlined by Unep last year including climate change and biodiversity loss. These challenges are addressed by global agreements but implementation remains patchy, according to a global ranking published by the British NGO Stakeholder forum for a sustainable future.

World agrees road-map to post-2012 climate pact
World governments agreed a negotiating framework to decide a new global climate policy by 2009 at the UN climate conference in Bali, Indonesia on Saturday.

The Bali road-map commits all developed countries to quantified greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and says "deep cuts" will be needed. Developing countries will commit to "appropriate mitigation actions".

Upon the insistence of the US, the road-map suggests no concrete emission reduction targets. But a footnote makes reference to documents from the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) which say reductions of up to 40 per cent by 2020 are needed to head off dangerous climate change.

Walsh not about to concede anything in Cancun
Concessions in the world trade talks needing further reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) "should not and would not be given", the Minister for Agriculture and Food said yesterday. Before his departure for the WTO negotiations in Canc??n, Mexico, yesterday, Mr Walsh said this was his bottom line for the talks between representatives of the 146 WTO members. He added that the importance of agriculture in the overall WTO context was well understood. Some partners making excessive demands on agriculture were not prepared to reciprocate elsewhere, however.

Canc??n trade summit to sideline green issues
Rows over agricultural subsidies likely to dominate major world trade liberalisation talks With the clock ticking down to the major world trade liberalisation summit in Canc??n, Mexico on 10-14 September, it is increasingly clear that environmental issues will take a low profile despite lobbying by the EU and other countries.

Wallstr??m upbeat on world summit outcome
The EU "can be satisfied" with the outcome of the world sustainability summit in Johannesburg earlier this month, European environment commissioner Margot Wallstr??m claimed today. Speaking at a meeting organised by the Centre for European policy studies, Ms Wallstr??m said the summit had added a new momentum to the cause of sustainable development - even if the EU had not won all its demands for concrete targets and timetables.

Level the playing field - Rich countries should slash their agricultural subsidi
Lobsters and moral outrage have been on the menu at the Earth Summit. Western nations have preached the gospel of free trade for so long that their citizens would be forgiven for thinking that it is a reality. Yet the West presides over a raft of subsidies and tariffs that keep prices high and cut farmers in developing countries out of markets. It is time to end this hypocrisy.
