Whelk, Purple Sea Urchin & Periwinkle

 Whelk: In 2006 almost half the number of whelks landed were under the regulation size.  In addition there has been the largest stock decline in fifteen years. It is vital that the size regulation is enforced and harvesting restricted

Purple Sea Urchin  
This species was over fished and is now locally extinct. Landings were as high as 375 tonnes in 1976 and are now down to zero. This is a key species therefore its local extinction will have an impact on the associated marine community

 Periwinkle
Landings are in decline but are still high probably due to the large increase in value. There are concerns that excessive numbers of juveniles are harvested.   it is vital that a size limit is established and enforced.  In addition a closed season is essential particularly during spawning.
