We object to the application for a license to continue dumping at the above location. Friends of the Irish Environment has taken a particular interest in the inadequate application in Ireland of European environmental Directives, including the Habitats Directive.

The application identifies a number of ecologically significant areas in the im- Mediate vicinity, including the riparian marsh and swamp woodlands known locally as Chamney's bog, described as unique in Co. Kildare. This swamp woodland is likely to be best classified as "residual alluvial forest", a priority habitat for the purposes of the Habitats Directive and thus deserving of candidate S.A.C. status. No decision which could affect the quality or quantity of ground or surface water flowing to this site should be taken until this site and the adjoining areas have been fully surveyed for the purposes of the Directive.
