EPA DIOXIN RESULTS QUESTION WASTE AWARENESS SPENDING

FIE is questioning the effect of EPA Waste Awareness campaigns after yesterday's release of the EPA's ‘Dioxin Levels in the Irish Environment - Fifth Assessment'.

‘In 2003 the EPA said that new studies showed that half of the dioxins were due to domestic burning of waste.

‘Did "Dump the dumpers" or the "See Something Say Something" campaigns actually have any effect? Did these costly campaigns achieve any clean up of dioxins in our environment?'

23 FEBRUARY 2007: EPA ACCUSED OF NOT MONITORING MOTORWAY AIR QUALITY
FIE's submission to a review of the Irish Environmental Protection Agency's VISION 2020 has followed on Dan Boyle, Green Party TD's suggestion that "I believe that if we had a proper environmental body, a body in which the public had confidence and in which there existed a widespread belief that our environment was being properly protected, then many of our citizens should not feel the need of having to go outside and seek international support for the type of environmental protection we should be doing ourselves." The submission reveals that no monitoring of traffic emission is being done on our motorways, particularly the M50 upgrade that audits to industrial establishments have fallen 68% in the last 2 years that present water quality standards are not sufficient to save legally protected endangered species that contrary to years of promises, no soil monitoring network has been established and that the EPA itself in spite of persistent and critical failures in water quality and monitoring by Local Authorities, has yet to use the powers given to it by the Environment Act 2003 to enforce the law. Read our PRESS RELEASE today on the failure to monitor emissions on motorways. And the FULL SUBMISSION.

28 JUNE: FIE SEEKS END TO BALLOON RELEASES
Friends of the Irish Environment have written to the President, Mary McAleese, seeking her assurances that she will not in future attend ceremonies at which balloons are released into the environment. The President last week attended a ceremony in west Cork at which 331 balloons were released as part of the memorial service held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Air India air crash. Balloons released in this manner become 'marine debris' and are a lethal hazard for sea turtles, dolphins, whales, fish, and seabirds who mistake them for squid and other natural prey. Press Release and letter to Mary McAlesse Media coverage: Ecologist blow up at McAlesse over 'lethal' balloons

Protest against Ireland's aviation subsidy
€290 subsidy each way Dublin and Knock Friends of the Irish Environment today called on the Minister for Transport to abandon plans to continue subsidizing internal aviation flights which are directly competing with Iarnr??d Éireann. The subsidised routes to Kerry, Galway, Knock and Sligo all compete directly with train services to Dublin. This subsidy has rocketed since introduction at a level of €1.1 million a year in 1995 to €20 million a year in 2003. Subsidies per passenger reached a shocking peak in 2003 of €290 subsidy each way for a trip between Dublin and Knock. Read Our Press Release. Read our Report on subsidies and greenhouse gas emisions.
