| Allihies weekend 2010 |
Alas Allihies Weekends are no more. When they began at the turn of the century these kinds of gatherings were relatively rare - by now there are so many think tanks and weekend retreats being run around the country that groups and individuals no longer needed ours, and especially one so far away at the edge of western Ireland.
However because we work remotly and very much seek to bring in new people who are excited by this work, we are holding our agm this year on a Saturday the 10th of April - the weekend after Easter - in the midlands. If you want to come and meet us all send us an email. We'll be heading out onto the bogs a year after we began our campaign to bring under control the vast unauthorised peat extractions in the midlands. | The Friends of the Irish Environment Week-end in Wicklow |
| The Friends of the Irish Environment Week-end was held this year in Wicklow 17/18th February 2007 in the beautiful surroundings of An Tairseach, the Dominican Farm and Ecological Centre above Wicklow Town.
For those that attended it was an enormously stimulating and exciting weekend. Reports and links will be posted here over the next few weeks. For specific details, contact the weekend organiser, Judy Osborne.

A note on participants
Patricia McKenna was a Green Party MEP from 1994 - 2004. Although she is perhaps best known for successfully challenging the use of state funds to support one side in the divorce refererendum ('The McKenna Judgement') she worked on the EU Environment, Public Health and Consumer Committee and was leader of the EU Green Party on the Fisheries Committee, addressing vested interests. She also worked on women's and general human rights issues with a particular interest in peace/disarmament/security, travelling outside the EU on various delegations, including to Baghdad.
Kathy Sinnott was elected as an Independent MEP for Munster in 2004, originally through the championing of disability rights, including a key legal case. She has taken up the issue of the failure of the Environmental Protection Agency to protect residents from adverse environmental impacts and met with groups all around Ireland earlier this month to coordinate approaches. The purpose of today's meeting is to explore the ways in which the agenda can be refined and advanced.
Aine Ryall of the Law faculty of UCC has interests in environmental law very similar to the practical problems experienced by FIE, rights to information, participation, and access to justice. A frequent contributor to Irish Planning and Environmental Law Journal, she has also published on the 20 euro planning fee. [FIE's case is now before the Supreme Court simply to have the right to have the case heard.] Hart Publishing has scheduled the publication of her 'Effective Judicial Protection and the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive in Ireland' for June 2006. She will focus today on the Aarhus Convention, using its power and potential for environmental NGOs, and deal specifically with direct effect in Irish law in the absence of implementing measures.
Ian Lumley is a long standing Irish conservationist. He was formerly a director with Michael Smith of Lancefort, the company established to contest Treasury Holding's plan for a central Dublin hotel and has also taken environmental litigation in his own right. Active in the foundation of FIE, he has been for the last 5 years An Taisce, the National Trust's, Heritage Officer. Using its privileges as a prescribed body for consultation under the Planning Acts, he has developed this role into a major force in Irish life with a wide range of planning appeals at a success rate of more than 90%.

Price includes workshops and vegetarian meals. Our venu, the Village Hostel, is under new management and will be €20 per person sharing per night and can not be blocked booked. Because it is a holiday weekend and there are other events in the area, you must book early to ensure a place in the Hostel [027 73131] or in bed and breakfasts, houses, or flats in the Village and local area, ring Mary O'Sullivan at 027-73004. [We will try and find a place for those with sleeping bags and limited funds.]
The Dublin - Killarney train Friday which leaves Houston Station at 6.30 will be met by a free minibus to Allihies. Arrive early for the train and go to the front. The bus leaves Killarney Friday at 9.45 PM sharp unless the train is late. You can join this bus even if you are not on the Dublin train. Return Monday leaving Allihies at 4 PM for the 6.05 PM train arriving Dublin 10.05 PM. Let us know about car sharing availability or requirements. Child minding assistance is also possible.
Allihies is at the extreme end of the Beara peninsula, an hour's drive from Bantry or Kenmare. There are mini-buses every day from Cork to Castletownbere, the nearest town 14 miles east of Allihies.
